About the Position
The Centre for Trades is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual with excellent communication skills. The Plumbing/Gasfitter Technician needs to be a responsible and self-motivated individual to provide technical services for the instructors in the plumbing/gasfitter programs. The position provides support for a four-year plumbing/gasfitter apprenticeship program by supporting instructors during lab classes, providing maintenance and equipment set-up, identifying issues with equipment, and basic lab experiment layout. The technician would provide support to center programs by maintaining and repairing shops and shop equipment, preparing labs and lab equipment for classes, and maintaining supplies and materials.
Position Details
The position is planned for 2 days/week, October – to June each year
- purchasing office and shop supplies
- purchasing materials for shop use, and tracking of purchases to ensure their timely arrival
- maintain, clean, repair when possible, arrange for repair, and storage of shop tools and equipment
- build teaching aids, jigs, and shop fixtures as required by instructors or institution for the shops
- arrange and coordinate material delivery
- submit requests for purchasing of supplies, material, and equipment
- department MasterCard management and administration
- clean, organize, and maintain tools, supply storage areas, bins, cupboards, etc. in the supply storage areas, and shops
- Maintain gas appliances used for instruction, water heaters, furnaces, boilers
- organize and store all printed materials, warranties, equipment manuals/maintenance materials for all tools and equipment in the plumbing area
- catalogue equipment (label for inventory) and replace as necessary all tools and equipment in the plumbing area
- schedule and perform regular equipment maintenance on all tools and equipment in the plumbing area
- develop and maintain a systematic inventory system that initiates purchases before supplies run out
- aid in maintaining the Plumbing Asset Planner
- maintaining WHIMIS and MSDS manuals
- complete an annual inventory for the plumbing program
- pick up emergency items from suppliers using department credit card
- aid in planning and fabrication of projects for the plumbing program
- attend staff meetings
Required Qualifications
  • Journeyperson certification in Plumber/Gasfitter B. Journeyperson certification in a recognized pipe trade may be considered.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, an aptitude to learn new software applications and systems
  • Self-motivated and ability to work positively in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications
• Certification in other pipe trades or HVAC and a wide range of diverse skills an asset
Salary AUPE Class Level 10 Step 1 $28.49/hr
