About the Position
Lethbridge College has been conducting applied research in agriculture for more than 30 years. Fundamental to Lethbridge College’s vision of leading and transforming education in Alberta, the Centre for Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CARIE) is a catalyst for economic growth, sustainability, and social development in the region. Our dedicated researchers and state-of-the-art facilities enable pre-commercial validation for commercial application in agriculture and agri-food in the areas of integrated food production systems, irrigation science, and post-harvest technology.

Reporting to the Director Applied Research Operations in CARIE, the Research Lab Compliance Specialist provides operational support to the applied research teams and projects in the Agriculture Research and Innovation Building. This employee oversees and coordinates the day-to-day operations of complex, highly technical laboratory spaces. These labs include, but are not limited to: analytical chemistry labs, grain testing lab, soil hydraulic and yield analysis lab, and soil prep lab. They provide expert guidance, technical oversight, and support to the users of the laboratories. They work closely with the applied research chairs and CARIE operational/administrative staff to deliver quality applied research services to clients and research collaborators in accordance with policies, procedures, and agreements.

This is a temporary position with the possibility of extension.
Position Details
  • Coordinates day-to-day laboratory use and ensures compliance with safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Manages an inventory of laboratory equipment and works with the users of the labs to determine equipment SOP’s, hardware, and software needs and advises the director and research chairs on needed equipment upgrades, replacement, service schedules and repairs.
  • Evaluates lab equipment utilizing a preventative maintenance plan, ensuring that all equipment and safety mechanisms are functioning properly.
  • Conducts regular lab checks, ensuring proper storage and installation of all items.
  • Manages materials and supplies inventory and maintains up-to-date lists and ensures proper storage and installation of all items.
  • Liaises with the CARIE administrative assistants to order all materials and supplies.
  • Follows the college’s procurement policies for ordering materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Helps write new and keeps current existing standard operating procedures and trains lab users as required.
  • Works closely with CARIE administrative team and the research chairs to ensure the operation needs of lab users are met.
  • Works closely with the OH&S department of the college to ensure compliance and encourages prompt reporting of health and safety concerns and incidents.
  • Oversees lab safety and takes prompt corrective action when unsafe conditions, practices, or equipment are reported or observed.
Required Qualifications
  • A master’s degree in a scientific field (preferably environmental chemistry, food chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field) is the minimum requirement for this position.
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations, including experimental, and/or research techniques, protocols, and procedures expected in analytical chemistry labs, grain testing lab, soil hydraulic and yield analysis lab, and soil prep labs.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining standard operating procedures for laboratory operations.
  • Knowledge of laboratory supplies, equipment, and services.
  • Experience managing inventory and purchasing processes is required, as is liaising with contractors and suppliers.
  • Ability to train employees on standard operating procedures of the laboratories.
  • Ability to design, install, build, test, operate and/or maintain complex laboratory equipment, machinery and/or tools.
  • Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, laboratory hygiene, and/or environmental health standards.
  • Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure and/or troubleshoot laboratory systems and instruments.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Willingness to learn new skills, balanced with an ability to perform routine tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must have organizational skills with the ability to switch tasks and balance multiple priorities are needed.
  • Must be self‐motivated with a demonstrated ability to think creatively and solve problems.
  • Must foster a positive work environment congruent with the institution’s mission, vision and values and have demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
Salary Starting from $65,127 to $71,787 per annum; commensurate with education and experience.
