About the Position
Human Resources is seeking an Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator to assist the college in building and maintaining a comprehensive health and safety management system. Reporting to the Occupational Health and Safety Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing advice and expertise in both technical and subject specific details across a wide range of programs within the Health & Safety scope. The position requires an understanding of and experience with OH&S including physical and psychological safety and Workers Compensation legislation, procedures, and reporting and Ergonomic Assessments.
Position Details
The primary areas of focus for this position include:
  • Support for the organization and the OHS Manager as required to attain the goal of COR certification/ ISO 45001.
  • Manage the ergonomic program as well as responsibility for training and assessment.
  • Raise awareness of and encourage participation in Health & Safety training programs currently available to employees. Monitor and track staff OH&S training and continue with the Ergonomic Training Program as a facilitator. In conjunction with other stakeholders, develop a recommended list of standard health and safety equipment including ergonomic furniture.
  • Assist in implementing new and improved current programs to enhance the Health & Safety orientation and training for existing and new employees. Mentor interested individuals to champion OH&S elements throughout the campus.
  • Assist in pursuing compliance with CAN/CSA-Z1003-13 Psychological health and safety in the workplace/ISO 45003-OHS Management-Psychological health and safety at work by providing guidance and training in psychological safety.
  • Initiate requisitions for OHS supplies and equipment, training programs, and other administrative supplies and activities for the OHS department.
  • Develop and maintain a records management system in both manual and electronic format, which includes health & safety, and workers compensation documentation. Safeguard the integrity and confidentiality of the information in files and ensure that information and records are maintained, stored and disposed of in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Create and update form letters and materials relating to claims and program information.
  • Assist with the development of policy and procedure needed to effectively manage OHS programs.
  • Maintain current statistics and records, providing reports as required and continue to develop new tracking systems, forms and statistical reports for Health & Safety.
  • Ensure proper documentation of incident reporting including WCB claims for students and employees.
  • Manage WCB claims in compliance with collective agreements, the WCB Act & regulations, Payroll and Human Resources Policy and Procedures. Liaise with the employee and monitor injured or ill workers rehabilitation process and act as the return to work coordinator for all WCB cases
    • Work with staff to ensure all WCB claims are properly reported, ensure all related leaves are evaluated to ensure proper intervention has been introduced including the development of appropriate return to work protocol and accommodation;
    • Manage the modified work program to meet legislative, collective bargaining and financial requirements and act as College representative in these matters.
  • Prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, and where required record and transcribe minutes.
  • In conjunction with the Health Promotions Coordinator assist in the promotion and coordination of wellness events for staff.
  • Identify and participate in professional development opportunities to maintain currency and attend relevant conferences and designation training.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Datatel system in order to process monthly payroll for injured employees.
Required Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree in Human Resources, OHS or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in an OHS position; combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Proven leadership experience within an OHS role
  • Experience in an unionized work environment
  • Ability to deal with WCB claims and issues of a sensitive complex nature requiring tact, flexibility and diplomacy
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to facilitate/train others
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize and meet deadlines and to work independently
  • Good judgement and problem solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Strict adherence to confidentiality
Preferred Qualifications
  • OHS certification or relevant designation (or working towards)
  • Experience with CSA Psychological Safety in the Workplace Standard
  • Training in Ergonomic Assessments and Job Demand Analysis
  • Experience in radiation safety, biosafety and occupational health would be considered an asset
Salary Starting from $65,127 to $74,009 per annum; commensurate with education and experience.
